While taking part in a conference in Tampere, you might have a few hours of free time. Would you like to take a little walk and enjoy a cup of coffee? I then recommend you turn your steps towards the Pyynikki Ridge (Pyynikin harju in Finnish)!
The beautiful Pyynikki Natural Park
The Pyynikki Natural Park area is just 25 minutes by foot (1,7 km) from the central square. It is a high ridge, which was formed during the ice age. The Pyynikki area is a popular forest park between Lake Näsijärvi and Lake Pyhäjärvi. Visitors and citizens of Tampere alike enjoy the scenery and stroll along the paths there.
Enjoy the best doughnuts
On top of the ridge, there is an old observation tower with a cafe, that serves probably the best doughnuts (munkki in Finnish) in the world. The cafe is called Pyynikin Munkkikahvila. You can find your way there by typing that name onto Google Maps. I also recommend, that you go up to the top of the observation tower. The view is stunning.
Take a video peek into the cafe
Students at the Tampere University of Applied Sciences did a video shoot at the cafe Pyynikin Munkkikahvila. This video gives you an idea about the atmosphere and the home-like service. The cafe is open daily from 9 a.m. until 8 in the evening. But beware, the 1st of May, (Vappu in Finnish) is a sort of a national doughnut day, when everyone enjoys lots of doughnuts. The line into the cafe can be quite long then!
